After serving 31 years in public education, Spartanburg District Five Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary has announced his plans to retire effective December 31, 2026.
The District Five Board of Trustees accepted Dr. Gary's retirement following an executive session during their public board meeting, held Monday, June 15.
In a letter to the Board, Dr. Gary reflected on his seven years as Superintendent of District Five. “These years have been among the most rewarding of my professional career, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in a district that is deeply committed to excellence and to the success of every student.”
Board Chair, Dr. Millie Malone, thanked Dr Gary for his inspiring leadership and service to the district.
“From new students, to new schools, District Five has grown tremendously during the last seven years, thanks to Dr. Gary’s leadership and commitment,” Dr. Malone said. “We are very sad to see him go, and are deeply grateful for his impact and dedication to our district. He leaves a tremendous legacy, and we can only hope to find a leader as strong to fill his shoes.”
After joining Spartanburg District Five in 2019, Dr. Gary guided the district through several significant milestones, navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, tremendous student enrollment growth, the successful passage of two bond referendums, and most recently, the opening of several new schools and construction of a brand new stadium and Nixon Field at Byrnes High School.
Throughout his tenure, District Five has continued to excel in academics, athletics, and the fine arts, expanding opportunities for all students. These accomplishments reflect Dr. Gary's visionary leadership, and dedication to ensuring District Five remains one of the very best districts in South Carolina.
While Dr. Gary will continue to work through December, the Board will announce plans soon regarding a search for the next Superintendent of Spartanburg District Five. A timeline, along with all search details, will be shared with employees, families, and the District Five community once plans are finalized.
“Over the coming months, I remain committed to the work ahead, and to supporting a smooth and successful leadership transition for the District,” Dr. Gary said. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve Spartanburg School District Five. I will always be proud of what we have accomplished together and grateful for the relationships and experiences that have shaped my time here.”
