In an overwhelming vote, Spartanburg District Five residents have approved the district’s $200 million bond referendum, paving the way for several major construction projects designed to meet the district's rapidly growing enrollment. The referendum, which will not include a tax increase, passed with nearly 80% of the vote.
“This is a milestone moment for our community,” says Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary. “We are very excited about the approval of this referendum, and truly thankful for the support of our District Five community."
With this voter approval, District Five will now begin planning and design work for several key projects:
Construction of a new middle school on the southern end of the district to relieve overcrowding at Florence Chapel and Abner Creek Middle Schools
Construction of a new Duncan Elementary School of the Arts designed to support the school's magnet programs
Construction of a new Byrnes Freshman Academy, offering additional space and resources for students transitioning to high school
With the referendum now approved, the district will move into the construction phase of this plan, with groundbreaking to occur in the coming months. "We're excited to move forward," says Dr. Gary. "We know we're investing in the future of District Five students for generations to come."
Updates, including project timelines and renderings, will be shared on the district’s bond referendum webpage in the coming months.
