Spartanburg District Five Schools is proud to announce that Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary has been named Citizen of the Year by the Middle Tyger Area Council, a division of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Gary received the honor during a special dinner and awards ceremony held on Monday, December 1, 2025.

The “Citizen of the Year” award recognizes an individual who demonstrates outstanding leadership, service, and commitment to the Middle Tyger community. Council leaders cited Dr. Gary’s steady, student-centered leadership in District Five, his engagement with local businesses and community partners, and his commitment to ensuring that every child has access to a world-class education.

Under Dr. Gary’s leadership, Spartanburg District Five has continued to grow in both student enrollment and academic achievement. In his selection, the Council noted a rise in graduation rate and test scores, the passage of two bond referendums, and a comprehensive growth plan, including the construction of several schools, all which have happened under Dr. Gary's leadership.
