Unity Day at ACMS! 🧡

Our next recipe this week is empanadas!
Mr. Dean has family that grew up in Chile.
They are a yummy favorite for many Spanish speaking countries. You can find hundreds of delicious ways to cook and prepare these tasty treats.
Empanadas made their way to Chile during the colonial period. It is said that they were brought over by the Spanish and have since become a staple of traditional Chilean cuisine. They can be cooked with a variety of seasonings and fillings. And can be made sweet or as a meal item.
Here are 2 versions of the recipe. One that uses premade biscuits, and one that includes making the dough from scratch. Enjoy!

Arroz con leche is a popular dish in many Spanish speaking countries. And roots are traced back to the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors.

Today we bring you 2 new recipes! While there are different recipes for all this wonderful food, we are trying to find simple ones that are easy to put together when cooking. We are combining 2 countries so we are doing 2 recipes. Colombia and Venezuela are our featured places today. As you might know, Venezuela and Ecuador used to be part of Colombia (called Gran Colombia) and hence their flags are similar. The first recipe is Arepas. Arepas are staples of South American and Panamanian cuisine. Panama also used to be part of Colombia. These can be served with butter or can be filled with cheeses and/or meat. William, a 6th grader, says: "These can be delicious when made with love and care." Martin, also a 6th grader, says that he prefers to eat them for breakfast or as a snack. I have also included a side dish of Coca-Cola rice from Colombia as well. In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month we will be featuring a recipe a day from a Spanish speaking country.
Today we are sharing a recipe for Ropa Vieja, a popular dish from Cuba. The folklore behind the dish says that a man had no food to feed his family so he cooked and seasoned his clothes. Ropa Vieja means old clothes. He prayed for food and the real food appeared.
Lester, one of our 6th graders is from Cuba and says, "We are an island in the Caribbean with beautiful water and delicious food."
This dish is a culinary delight and we have found a simple, slow cooker version to prepare. We hope you enjoy it and please stay tuned for our next one!
