District Five Mourns Loss Of Beloved Teacher, Student
Spartanburg District Five Schools joins the entire community in grieving the loss of two beloved members of the Wellford Academy, and District Five family. Megan Barnett, a teacher’s assistant at Wellford, and her daughter, Briley, a 1st grader at the school, died tragically Tuesday in a car accident not far from the school campus.
Megan worked for District Five since 2015, and was a kindergarten teacher’s assistant at Wellford, where she was a bright light for her students and fellow faculty members. She was a Wellford product, herself, and a proud Byrnes High School graduate. Her vivacious smile and laugh reflected her huge heart, and the love she had for her family, school and community.
Briley was a smart, spunky 1st grader at Wellford who loved school, and her family. Her smile was just as bright as her mother’s, and her radiant personality will be missed terribly by teachers, classmates, family and friends. “These two precious people were such a huge part of Wellford Academy,” says Principal Angie Showalter. “Their loss leaves a huge hole in all of our hearts.”
Additional grief counselors and mental health staff were on hand at Wellford Academy today, and will remain throughout the week as long as students or staff need them.
Funeral arrangements for Megan and Briley Barnett have not yet been made, but District Five will communicate them as soon as they are finalized. We ask that the entire community keep the Barnett family in your thoughts and prayers in the days to come.
