District Five Names New Administrators
Spartanburg District Five Schools is excited to welcome two new faces to its team! The District Five Board of Trustees unanimously approved the selection of Marc Zachary, Principal of Duncan Elementary School of the Arts, and Jean Brewington, Director of Instructional Services. Brewington will begin immediately, while Zachary officially takes over July 1.
“I am super excited to be joining the family at Duncan Elementary,” says Zachary. “There is so much potential with the infusion of the arts at the school, and I can’t wait to see how that can expand the potential of our students.”
Zachary comes to the district after serving as Executive Director of Legacy Early College Charter School in Greenville County. Prior to that, he spent much of his career in Spartanburg District Seven, most recently as Chief Administrative Officer of Human Resources. Zachary served as Principal of Mary H. Wright Elementary School from 2015-2019, leading the school to raise student achievement by over 30%. He began his administrative journey as Principal of E.P. Todd Elementary School in 2004. Zachary started his career in the classroom, teaching at Mary H. Wright, where he was tapped as “Teacher of the Year” and “Young Educator of the Year” by the Spartanburg Jaycees.
“Marc Zachary has a proven track record as an outstanding school leader,” says District Five Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary. “I’m excited to see how he uses that excellent foundation we have at Duncan, and then builds upon that success.”
Zachary earned his Bachelors in Elementary Education from Clemson University, his Master’s from Converse College, and a Educational Specialist and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina He will follow longtime Principal Dr. Susan Hill, who will retire in June.
Jean Brewington, who has filled the role of Director of Instructional Services in an interim capacity since September of this year, will now hit the ground running, and continue to build upon the foundation she’s already established.
Brewington came to District Five from Spartanburg District Three, where she most recently served as Principal of the Middle School of Pacolet. She also served as Director of Elementary Education in that district from 2012-2017. Brewington’s experience in education is vast, as prior to District Three, she held the roles of Assistant Superintendent, Principal, Assistant Principal and Instructional Facilitator in nearby Cherokee and Union County. She started her career as a 2nd grade teacher at Clifdale Elementary School in Spartanburg.
Brewington earned her Bachelors in Elementary Education from Limestone College. She went on to complete her Masters of Education in Reading, and her Education Specialist Degree, from the University of South Carolina in Columbia.
“Jean Brewington brings a wealth of experiences with instructional leadership from the classroom, building and district levels,” says Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Jeff Rogers. “She is a leader of leaders who has dedicated her life to public education. We are so thankful to have her in D5!”
