DHEC Releases Updated Guidelines For COVID-19 Isolation And Quarantine
As Spartanburg District Five students return to the classroom from holiday break on January 4, 2022, there will be new guidelines in place, regarding COVID-19. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Conrol (DHEC), along with the CDC, have issued these guidelines when it comes to isolation or quarantine, for both those who are infected or those who are close contacts of COVID positive individuals.
The updated criteria for isolation and quarantine are as follows:
If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19:
Must isolate for at least 5 days since symptoms started (return to school on day 6 at earliest) – AND –
24 hours since the last fever without using fever-reducing medication – AND –
Symptoms have significantly improved (students must have a parent note confirming all criteria met).
As required by DHEC, students and staff who choose to return after day 5 MUST wear a mask for days 6-10
For any student or staff member considered a close contact of someone with COVID-19:
Must quarantine for 5 days, and may return on day 6 if a COVID-19 test is NEGATIVE (home tests cannot be accepted) – AND – no symptoms reported. If you have questions about testing, or how to receive one, please contact your school nurse.
The test must be taken no earlier than day 4, and quarantine must continue through day 5 (return on day 6).
As required by DHEC, masks MUST be worn through day 10
If the close contact does not present a negative test, they must quarantine through day 10
No quarantine required (as long as symptom free)
DHEC recommends test on day 5 (even if symptom free)
Must wear mask days 1-10 at school
If a close contact has received all vaccine doses they are eligible to receive (initial vaccination series ANDbooster for those eligible - see CDC websitefor booster eligibility) or if the close contact is verified to have been infected with COVID-19 within the previous 90 days, they do not have to quarantine for any length of time.
