District Releases COVID Precautions For 2021-22 School Year
Spartanburg District Five is excited to welcome our students back for the 2021-22 school year on Monday, August 16. Students and staff will be returning to a full in-person schedule, and the District is committed to keeping them as safe and healthy as possible.
With this in mind, District Five will be following a set of COVID-19 precautions for the 2021-22 school year. These precautions were determined after considering the guidance of the South Carolina Department of Environmental Health and Control (DHEC) and the CDC, as well as working with the restrictions of state law.
A full list of the precautions can be found here, and are listed below.
Masks and Face Coverings
Masks will not be required, but are strongly encouraged for Spartanburg District Five students and staff, while in school and on school buses.
This precaution is working within the parameters issued in South Carolina Proviso 1.108 which reads:
1.108. (SDE: Mask Mandate Prohibition): No school district, or any of its schools, may use any funds appropriated or authorized pursuant to this act to require that its students and/or employees wear a facemask at any of its education facilities. This prohibition extends to the announcement or enforcement of any such policy.
Social distancing of three feet will be observed in schools and buildings, to the greatest extent possible, as recommended in DHEC and CDC guidelines.
District health staff and school nurses will conduct strict contact tracing in schools and buildings, based on positive COVID tests. If a student is exposed to a COVID positive individual, and is considered a close contact, parents or family will be notified.
Students and staff members determined to be close contacts of COVID positive individuals will be quarantined. While the district is not permitted by law to ask about vaccination status, those who voluntarily provide proof of vaccination and are not symptomatic, can return to school.
District Five will continue to offer COVID testing for symptomatic students and staff, upon request.
Lunch, Large Assemblies, Etc.
Lunch schedules, along with arrival and dismissal, will return to normal. However, as COVID infection rates change, the District may increase restrictions.
Large assemblies are not recommended in schools at this time.
Visitors will be allowed in District Five schools for the 2021-22 school year. While masks are not required at this time, the District reserves the right to restrict its visitor policy and visitor mask guidelines as needed.
