District Moves Wellford Academy To Virtual Learning
Spartanburg District Five Superintendent Dr. Randall Gary has made the difficult decision to close Wellford Academy, due to COVID 19 numbers, and move the school to virtual learning for the week of December 14-18.
The decision was made based on the COVID infection rates among school staff, along with quarantining of staff and students as a result. According to Dr. Gary, "Because of this, the district was concerned we simply did not have enough staff members to provide coverage for students or classes at the school."
It is important to note: while contact tracing did indicate some spread among staff members at the school, others were found to have contracted the virus through household or community close contacts.
District Five continues to encourage both our employees and students and families to remain vigilant inside and outside of our school campuses. Wear a mask, practice social distancing, and please don't come to school if you're feeling ill or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
All teachers will be in touch with Wellford students and families to provide further instructions for the week. In addition, Principal Angie Showalter will communicate with parents and families regarding device pickup at the school, if students left their laptops on campus.
While we realize this is difficult news, the safety of our students and staff is always our first priority in District Five Schools.
