District Five Students To Receive Free Meals Through End of Year
All students in Spartanburg District Five Schools will receive FREE breakfast and lunch every day, thanks to the extension of the “Seamless Summer” program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The district received official approval from the South Carolina Department of Education this week, and will begin serving the free meals to students immediately. The free meals are available, regardless of a student’s meal status, through December 31, 2020, or until congressional funding for the program runs out.
The program also applies to students in the Spartanburg Five Virtual Academy and hybrid students, who are taking home meals for days they are not attending school in person. Virtual students who wish to receive the free meals must continue the registration process already in place with the district. Registration is available weekly through this link. Virtual students can pick up their five-day meal pack each Monday from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Duncan Elementary School of the Arts or River Ridge Elementary School.
Hybrid students who want the meals for days they are NOT attending school in person must also register, so our Chartwells staff can appropriately prepare.
District Five will not charge any student’s meal account, as long as this program remains in effect.
District Five encourages parents to continue to complete free and reduced lunch applications, as this new meal program will expire at the end of this year. Parents can access free and reduced meal applications through the district’s website or in the front office of their child’s school.
