District Five, Byrnes High School Release Graduation Plans
James F. Byrnes High School, along with Spartanburg District Five Schools, is proud to announce it will have its traditional in-person graduation ceremony on Nixon Field for the Class of 2020, just as it has done for generations of Rebel graduates! The ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Nixon Field. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be rescheduled for Saturday, May 30 at 9:00 a.m., also at Nixon Field.
In order to protect graduates and guests, District Five will implement specific safety measures, according to guidance from the South Carolina Department of Education, Governor Henry McMaster, and medical professionals. Those safety measures include:
- Graduates will receive 2 tickets each, per the guidance of the SC Department of Education, to adhere to social distancing restrictions.
- The ceremony will be livestreamed for family members and friends not in attendance.
- Graduates will be seated six feet apart on Nixon Field.
- Guests will also be asked to sit six feet apart, per social distancing restrictions.
- District Five will provide masks for all graduates. Guests are asked to wear masks as well. If you do not bring one of your own, one will be provided for you.
- Graduates will be given the opportunity to walk across the stage, one at a time. No hand shaking will take place.
Additional details regarding arrival information for graduates, specific entry and exit procedures, and other safety measures will be released in the coming weeks.
We have also planned a month of special Senior celebrations to include:
- Light Up Nixon
Every Friday night in May, at 8:20 p.m., the lights at Nixon Field will be turned on to support our Seniors! The lights will stay on for 20 minutes in honor of the Class of 2020. The stadium itself will be locked and closed, due to social/physical distancing restrictions. We ask that students, parents and community members not gather in groups, but hope that you’ll take pictures/videos safely from your cars, and share them with us on social media, using #LightUpNixon to spread the love.
- Senior Yard Signs
May 14-15 (8:00 am -12:00 pm and 1:00 - 5:00 pm)Every Rebel graduate will receive a yard sign, to congratulate and remind them how proud we are of them! Signs will be distributed on May 14-15, when seniors return their devices and materials to school
- Grad Walks
May 21-22 (schedule to be released soon!)
Get ready for one last walk down memory lane! We’re excited we can still host this special tradition at each of our District Five elementary schools this year, although the “walks” will be modified for safety.Specific times for each school will be released soon, as well as a signup on Schoology for seniors who want to participate.
Saluting Our Seniors Parade
May 21, 6:00 p.m.
Grab your Rebel gear, decorate your cars, and get ready to show your school spirit for a Senior Parade! SThe route will start at Byrnes, and allow spectators to keep their physical distance, while still cheering for their special senior! More details to come.
Senior Awards Night
Sadly, we will not be able to hold this event, as originally scheduled. HOWEVER, we are working on a way we can still properly honor award/scholarship recipients online, through social media and other means. Stay tuned for details!
