Nearly 9,000 students headed back to the classroom with smiles on their faces as District Five kicked off the 2019-20 school year! While many of the students are new to District Five, there was another new face amongst the crowd on opening day: new Superintendent, Dr. Randall Gary. Dr. Gary officially joined the District over the summer, and was excited for his first day of school in District Five. "There was excitement in the air," Dr. Gary said. "And I was happy to see our kids so excited to be back in school."
The excitement was a little more than normal at the new campus of Reidville Elementary School. More than 400 students, teachers and staff members were thankful to be in their brand new classrooms, after more than a year of construction. The 87,000 square foot school is more than 55% bigger than the old Reidville campus, and includes 30 state of the art classrooms, a media center equipped with unique seating options for students, and a cafeteria with a stage and performance capability.
Elsewhere across the district, some schools opened with new faces in administration. Chris McCants returned "home" to assume the role of Principal at Florence Chapel Middle School. McCants was previously Principal at Beech Springs Intermediate School, but began his career teaching middle school ELA at Florence Chapel. Meanwhile, Taylor Deal was welcomed as the new Principal at Beech Springs Intermediate School. Deal was previously the Assistant Principal at Reidville Elementary, but began his teaching career at Beech Springs.
According to the most recent numbers, the new school year will mean more growth for the district as well. Currently, enrollment is up by 4%, totaling 360 students, over last school year.
