In Person Instruction FAQ's
-
When is the first day of school for students?
The 2020-21 school year will begin on August 17, 2020. For in person learning on the hybrid schedule, this means students in Group A (last names A-K) will attend on this day. Students in Group B (last names L-Z) will attend on Tuesday, August 18.
-
How does District Five plan to reopen schools for the fall?
District Five will begin on a Hybrid model for ALL STUDENTS. This means students will attend school two days a week, and participate in blended and distance learning at home the other days. Students will be divided into two groups alphabetically. Group A (last names A-K) will attend school Monday and Wednesday. Group B (last names L-Z) will attend school Tuesday and Thursday. On the days each group is not attending in person, they will continue to be engaged through flexible home learning. On Fridays, all students in all grade levels will participate in Distance Learning from home, with teachers instructing from their classrooms.
-
When will students get back to full face-to-face instruction five (5) days a week?
District Five hopes to return to full face to face instruction, 5 days a week, AS SOON AS IT IS SAFE TO DO SO. Leaders will continually reevaluate and monitor guidance from DHEC and the CDC. When we do transition, we plan to move to the "family" model, with Kindergarten-6th grade students first. Middle and high school students would remain in the hybrid schedule, until the district believes it's safe to transition all students to in person instruction.
-
What if I don't feel comfortable sending my child back to school?
We recognize that the needs and concerns of all of our families are different. If you're not comfortable sending your student back to school, we have created the Spartanburg Five Virtual Academy, to allow students to continue their learning online. Click here for more information on the Virtual Academy.
-
Do I still need to register my children, even if they are enrolling in the Virtual Academy?
Yes, all students who are in District Five MUST REGISTER for school. Parents should have received a SNAPCODE by email, or in the mail, to begin this process. If you are a parent of a kindergarten student, or NEW student to District Five, you must contact your zoned school to complete registration.
-
Do I have to "apply" for the hybrid option if I want face to face instruction for my child?
No. Those who did not enroll in our Virtual Academy are AUTOMATICALLY put in the hybrid face to face option.
-
Will siblings or members of the same household be allowed to attend the same days under the hybrid plan?
Yes. Siblings and members of the same household will be accommodated. This includes students who may have different last names. Simply contact your child's school to make these arrangements.
-
Will students be given a computer, or device, this school year?
Yes, due to the fact that students will be participating in flexible learning and distance learning from home under the hybrid format, ALL STUDENTS will be given a device this year. This INCLUDES Virtual Academy students. If students have issues with Wi-Fi or reliable internet access, the district is working on options to provide internet to those families.
-
What about 4K? What schedule will those students follow?
4K will also follow the hybrid schedule, just like Kindergarten - 12th grade. Students will fall in the same attendance groups as the other grades: Group A (Last names: A-K) and Group B (Last names: L-Z).
-
What will class size be this year?
Class sizes will vary depending on grade level, and the number of our students who select the Virtual Academy option.
