Virtual Academy Program
Spartanburg District Five offers a full virtual option for students in grades K5-12. this unique option allows students to stay at home and receive instruction off campus. You MUST be enrolled in a Spartanburg District Five school in order to attend the Spartanburg Five Virtual Academy. Students remain based in their home zoned Spartanburg District Five school and follow the same district/school policies and calendar.
Students in the Spartanburg Five Virtual Academy program may be expected to work somewhat independently, depending on grade level. They also must be committed to "attending" live sessions (sychronous learning), accessing and engaging in some recorded sessions (asynchronous learning), along with following through with completion of assignments. District laptops are provided for all Virtual Academy students.
This option differs from the remote learning experience that students had in the spring of 2020, during the schools' closure. The Spartanburg Five Virtual Academy provides a more consistent curricular and instructional delivery model consisting of a daily schedule. Virtual students follow a specific schedule that will allow for some flexibility and choice, but also provide daily structure to the school day. Schedules will differ based on student grade levels (elementary, middle and high school). Students are given opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities, related/fine arts, small group instruction, and social emotional learning. Students will be assigned to a class or classes taught by Spartanburg District Five teachers and with other students throughout the district. High school students who participate in courses through RD Anderson Applied Technology Center are able to choose the Virtual Academy, and still attend classes at RD Anderson.
Virtual teachers in grades K6 teach the core subjects of English, math, science and social studies. Virtual students in grades 7-12 use APEX, an online curriculum. APEX (Academic and Professional Excellence) is a complete digital curriculum in math, science, English, and social studies. Students complete courses through an online learning platform, where they work at their own pace toward scheduled due dates. A teacher facilitates each course.
Student Support Services are provided in this virtual learning platform. A Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS/RTI) model is in place to provide students the support necessary to help them achieve their full potential. Students who receive specially designed instruction are provided services as stated in their Individual Education Plans (IEP's). Speech and Language, Special education and related services identified in his or her IEP will be provided to the greatest extent possible. Students who have 504 plans will receive the accommodations and modifications as defined in their 504 plans. Students who receive ELL services have an ELL plan that identifies their level of services and supports. The Virtual Academy program will not necessarily be the best fit for every child. However, every effort will be made to maintain consistent contact with students and their families in order to maximize service delivery.
When selecting this option, parents and students must commit to the Virtual Academy for a MINIMUM OF THE FIRST SEMESTER and will not be able to switch to another format.
