Welcome to ESOL!
Greetings! The school year has been great so far! My name is Mrs. Mamye Gardner and I am your child’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) teacher. It is so exciting to be here at Abner Creek Academy and to work with your child and help him develop his speaking, reading, listening, and writing of English! I will serve as a support to your child while working closely with his classroom teacher.
I began my teaching career on the secondary level @ Boiling Springs High School. I taught Spanish to elementary students for 14 years and am currently in my fourth year as an ESOL teacher. I am a proud graduate of Clemson University (Go Tigers!!), where I received a B.A. degree in Spanish and a B.S. degree in Secondary Education. I received my M.Ed. in Elementary Education from Converse College and also have my Masters + 30 in Languages/ESOL.
My family and I live in Duncan. My husband, Joseph, and I have two beautiful daughters, Lydia (13) and Charlotte (10). I love spending time with my family and friends, shopping, traveling, watching sports, good music, and good food!I'm excited to welcome you and your child/ren to ESOL. In our schools, we have a mixture of cultures, family heritages, and languages, and I am delighted to work with students from such diverse backgrounds! Being bilingual is a true asset in our changing world. However, the process of becoming bilingual can create gaps in a student's education, where it is difficult to fully show what a student truly knows. The purpose of ESOL is to bridge those gaps for students from non-English backgrounds by helping them get the language and academic skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
