    Physical Education II – TEAM SPORTS SYLLABUS

    Purpose

    The objective of this course is to provide opportunities that will enhance muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and total body development.  Development of qualities such as cooperation, teamwork, leadership, patience, and discipline will also be encouraged while playing within the parameters of team activities. 

     

    Curriculum Content Standards in Physical Education

     

    A physically educated person…

     

    Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

     

    Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities

     

    Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity.

     

    Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing

    level of physical fitness,

     

    Standard 5: Exhibits responsible personal and

    social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings

     

    Standard 6: Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self expression and/or social interaction.

     

     

     

    Grading System:

     

    Participation

    Students are required to participate in the day’s activities even if they aren’t dressed out.  Everyone will participate every day.  Only medical excuses are accepted.  If a student is too sick to dress out and participate, the instructor will write an office note for them to go home.  The participation grade includes being prepared for class, participating fully in class activities and adhering to Standard 5(see above).

     

    Dressing Out/Participation - 70%

    Written Assignments /Unit Tests/Projects  - 30%

    (Exam - 20% of semester grade)

        

     

    Students begin each 9-week grading period with a dressing out/participation grade of 100.  Each time you do not dress out, you will still be required to participate in class activities but 5 points will be deducted from this part of your grade.  If your clothing is inappropriate for the class activity, you will be required to walk.  In other words, all students will be required to participate whether you’re dressed out or not   If you refuse to participate, you will receive an immediate principal referral.  If you are too sick to participate or walk, your principal will call your parent to come get you from school. 

     

    Participation Grading Scale

    1st offense:  -5 pts. & warning

    2nd offense: -5 pts. & parent contact

    3rd offense: -5 pts. & guidance referral

    4th offense: -5 pts. & principal referral

    5th offense: -5 pts. same thereafter

     

    Uniforms

    P.E. uniforms (shorts and t-shirt) cost $20.  If you wish to purchase shorts only, it will cost $12.  Cotton t-shirts alone cost $8 and dri-fit sleeveless shirts are $12.  Each student is expected to either wear the Byrnes P.E. uniform or similar apparel in class every day – athletic shorts and a white/blue t-shirt or a shirt with Byrnes imprinted on it.  Athletic shoes are required.  Sweat suits may be worn.  Daily uniform rental is .50 per article of clothing.  (Don’t rely on the rental system; clean clothes may not be available on a daily basis!)  It is the responsibility of the student to wash uniforms at least twice a week.

     

     

    Lockers/Locks

    It is strongly suggested that no pocketbooks, wallets, jewelry, money, etc. be left in the gym or locker rooms.  You are highly recommended to rent a lock for $2.00 if you want to use a locker.  If that lock is lost, you must pay $5.00.  Do not share lockers and do not give your combination to anyone else.

     

    Tardies

                Students who are not in the gym when the tardy bell rings are classified as

                tardy.

    General Rules

    -There will be absolutely no horseplay in the gym or locker rooms at any time.

    -RESPECT for all and a GOOD WORK ETHIC are the cornerstones of our class.

    -You are responsible for any equipment that is misused such as throwing or kicking 

      equipment inappropriately.  At no time should any equipment come in contact with the

      ceiling, lights or windows in the gym.  Do not hang on the basketball goals, nets, or  

      supports.

    -Do not pull out bleachers if they’re closed.  Do not sit in bleachers unless told to do so by a P.E.

      teacher.

    The following locations are considered off limits or in an unauthorized area:

    - Behind the bleachers

    - Outside of the gym at any time during class without permission

    - In the weight room without permission

    - On the hall opposite your gender…boys should be on boys side of the hall and girls on girls side of the hall

    - By the water fountain for an extended amount of time

    - Sitting or standing on the basketball goals.

    Athletic shoes must be worn at all times on the gym floor.  Those not having appropriate shoes will be required to walk on the outer tiled section of the floor for exercise during participation time.

    Students are not allowed to hang on the basketball rims or nets.

    Bathroom Policy:  Students are given ample time to use the restroom before and after class.  Only 3 emergency passes will be allowed throughout the semester. Students will not be allowed back in the locker rooms during class time.

    Purpose:

    The objective of this course is to provide opportunities that will help in the development and maintenance of good health.   This process is best promoted when young people are given the opportunity to acquire accurate health information and to develop healthful attitudes and behaviors.  This course will provide an avenue which students may evaluate their own lifestyle choices and behaviors as well as those of our society.  The ultimate goal is for students to make “healthy” choices now as well as in the future.

     

    Curriculum Content: Standards in Health

    1.      The student will comprehend concepts related to health promotion to enhance health.

    2.      The student will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors on health behaviors

    3.      The student will demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.

    4.      The student will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risk.

    5.      The student will demonstrate the ability to use decision making skills to enhance health.

    6.      The student will demonstrate the ability to use goal setting skills to enhance health.

    7.      The student will demonstrate the ability to practice health enhancing behaviors and to avoid or reduce health risk.

    8.      The student will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and consumer health.

    Specific Additional Information:

    Class sessions will include group work, discussions, student presentations as well as Physical Activity.  Most class sessions involve active participation.  All work will be placed in a HEALTH NOTEBOOK.  Student must have a 3 ring binder to keep track of all work.  Keep up with this and add to it every day.

    Grading System:

    50% Classwork and Projects

    25% Participation in Activities

    25% Quizzes and Test

    Classroom expectations: are the same as those in the student handbook.  Also students are expected to participate in class discussions with appropriate behaviors and terminology that are used in class.  Students must respect the opinions of others in the class.  Assignments are due on time for full credit unless student is absent.  After that 10% will be taken off the grade for every day late.  We will be active in this class as well.  Please wear appropriate shoes on days we will be doing these activities.  Plan on Tuesday and Thursday going out and participating in some type of physical activity (such as walking or fitness gram tests).  You will not need to dress in comfortable clothes and tennis shoes.  Cell Phones can only be allowed during appropriate times not during class time.

    Tardies and Inappropriate Cell Phone Use :  Follows the course of action that is in the student handbook.
