State Funded Scholarships
South Carolina Hope Scholarship
This is a state-awarded scholarship valued at $2,800 for the first year only. Students that have a final minimum 3.0 GPA but do not qualify for the LIFE are eligible to receive this scholarship. Students who receive the SC HOPE and earn a 3.0 at the end of the first year of college may receive the LIFE Scholarship for the second year of college. No application is necessary for this scholarship. Eligibility is based on your final transcript.
South Carolina Life Scholarship
This is a state-awarded scholarship valued at $5000 per year. Students must meet two of the three requirements (1) your final, cumulative grade point average must be a minimum 3.0; (2) minimum 1100 SAT (combined critical reading and math sections) or 24 ACT; or (3) rank in the top 30% of your class at graduation. For a two year college students must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (the test score and class rank requirements are waived.) No application is necessary for this scholarship. Eligibility is based on your final transcript.
South Carolina Palmetto Fellows Scholarship
This is a state-awarded scholarship valued at $6700 per year. Students may be eligible to apply if they meet the following three criteria: 1200 SAT/27 ACT, 3.5 GPA, top 6% of the class at the end of the sophomore, junior, or senior year; or meet the following two criteria 1400 SAT/32 ACT and 4.0 GPA at end of the junior or senior year. Students that meet the criteria will be notified by guidance to complete an application. More information about these state scholarships is available online at www.che.sc.gov
South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance
This state awarded money varies each year dependent on the South Carolina Lottery Revenue. Students must be enrolled in at least six credit hours a semester and advancing toward a degree at one of the state’s two-year institutions. Students must complete the FAFSA as soon after October 1 as possible. Awards are handled by the college financial aid office.

BMW Scholars Program
The BMW Scholars Program allows students to attend class fulltime at local community colleges while working part time at BMW. Students are able to attend Spartanburg Community College, Greenville Technical College or Tri-County Technical College and gain experience. BMW will pay student’s tuition and books. David M. Cline Scholarship
This scholarship applies to students who wish to further their education in law enforcement, criminal justice, or forensic science. The recipient receives the scholarship for one year of college. Wallace F. Pate Scholarship
This scholarship applies to students who wish to further their education in the natural resources discipline such as wildlife biology, fisheries biology, forestry or marine science. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Scholarship
Scholarship available for selected senior African American females. Scholarship criteria:
- The student must enroll in an accredited post-secondary school within 12 months of receiving the scholarship.
- Be permanent resident of Spartanburg county.
- Have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 on 4.0 scale.
- Submit a typed essay.
- Submit an official school transcript.
- Have two letters of recommendation from school personnel, sent directly to the committee.
- Submit a 4x6 picture (will not be returned)

Laura M Fleming Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Founders Federal Credit Union in memory of its former President and CEO. The purpose is to provide undergraduate scholarships to children of Founders Federal Credit Union members to attend a college of their choice. Applicants must be the children of Founder Federal Credit Union members in good standings for a minimum of 2 years who have a minimum 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). The SCEA-Retired Scholarship
$1,000 scholarship awarded to students who prepare to enter a career in education and plan to attend a SACS accredited college/university in SC. Applicants must demonstrate leadership abilities and need financial assistance. Applications available in guidance. Postmarked deadline is March 24.
Emily L. Martin Educational Incentive Grant
Alpha Mu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma scholarship committee offers scholarship for female students who are interested in becoming a teacher. Students need 2 letters of recommendation and must write an essay explaining why they want to be a teacher. Applications available in guidance. Deadline is email submission by April 2
Block B Athletic Alumni Club Scholarship Criteria
The recipient of the Block B Athletic Alumni Club Scholarship will be awarded a one-time scholarship to be used to finance his or her college/university degree.
Criteria for Eligibility:
*Senior at James F. Byrnes High School
*Athlete earning a minimum of three Block letters by Spring semester of Senior year
*Plans to attend an accredited university or college
*Submit an official school transcript along with class rank, GPA and SAT or ACT score
*Submit three letters of recommendation, one each from: 1-your head coach or position coach on your athletic team, 2-a school recommendation (teacher, administrator or guidance counselor), 3-your choice
*Submit a 500-word essay discussing academic goals for the future and community service
*Demonstrate good character, satisfactory academic progress and community service involvement
Complete the scholarship application by March 29 and submit to Dr. Mabry in the Byrnes High Guidance Department.
BOBBY CHAPMAN JUNIOR GOLF FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Bobby Chapman Scholarship is to be awarded to a senior of a secondary school in the Southeastern United States and/or participate in a prior Bobby Chapman Invitational. The student recipient may or may not be a golfer and must be accepted to a four year degree school as a full-time student. The student recipient is to be a person of good character, a person with demonstrated leadership capacity, a person who has acceptable academic promise and a person who promises to make a positive contribution as a mature citizen. The student recipient will be expected to maintain a scholastic performance level that advances him/her to graduation. This is understood to be a grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. The Kiwanis Club Scholarship
Scholarship available for students who plan to attend one of the following post-secondary schools: Wofford College, Converse College, USC-Upstate, Spartanburg Methodist College, or Spartanburg Community College. Student must demonstrate leadership, service to community, a good academic record, and financial need. Applications available in guidance and must be returned to Dr. Mabry by March 17.
Spartanburg County Anonymous Scholarship
Scholarship available for students who demonstrate financial need (preference given to first generation college students), have good character, demonstrate leadership, have academic promise, and plans to make a positive contribution as a mature citizen. Applications available in guidance and must be returned to Dr. Mabry by March 17.
SC State Fair Ride of Your Life Scholarship Program
The State Fair will award fifty (50) $6000 scholarships to students across the state to be paid at the rate of $1500 per year over a four year period. The fifty scholars will be required to meet eligibility requirements deemed necessary by the South Carolina State Fair. Scholarship application and eligibility requirements are available at www.scstatefair.org. Deadline March 15.
Joye Law Firm
Joye Law Firm will be choosing six recipients this year each to receive $2,000 towards their education. This scholarship is open to all seniors in South Carolina that will be attending a 4-year university. District 5 Food Service Scholarship
This one time award will be presented annually to a senior whose parent is a full-time employee of School District 5 and who meets the following criteria: outstanding academic achievement, school/community service, and leadership potential. District 5 Coca-Cola Scholarship
This one time award will be presented annually to a senior who plans to pursue a degree from a technical college and who meets the following criteria: outstanding academic achievement, school/community service, and leadership potential. Mason Gaston Memorial Scholarship
This one time award will be presented annually to a senior who plans to pursue a degree in agriculture/horticulture and who meets the following criteria: outstanding academic achievement, school/community service, and leadership potential. William Russell Sloan Scholarship
This annual scholarship was created to provide assistance for a worthy and deserving senior of Byrnes High who wishes to pursue a higher education degree with a specialty in the field of visual arts. Applications available in guidance. All applications must be turned in to Dr. Mabry by
John David Hortman Scholarship
The purpose of this $1000 memorial scholarship is to assist students who show leadership, school spirit, selfless service, and admired by all. The Rev. Dr. Calvin Timothy Clark Scholarship
Holly Springs Baptist Church in Inman, South Carolina, in recognition of Dr. Tim Clark’s 25 years of service to our congregation and community, has established this scholarship to be used by a high school senior who is planning to attend a 4-year college or university and major in a field of Christian Ministry. $1000 scholarship offer through Carolina Orthopaedic & Neurological Associates for students who have an interest in Health Care. James T Kennedy
This memorial scholarship is dedicated to the late James T Kennedy who was the first African-American male teacher at Byrnes High School. Tywanza Sanders Legacy Foundation
The Tywanza Sanders Legacy Scholarship was established in 2017 to honor the legacy of Tywanza Sanders and his commitment to education. Tywanza was a victim of the Emanuel Church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina. The mission of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to individuals enrolling in undergraduate study at a four- year college/university or in beauty school in the United States. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, have a 2.5 GPA (4.0 scale) or higher, and submit a short written essay with application.
